Fast-course California International Marathon is filling fast with runners

The 2014 California International Marathon is 90 percent full.

The race from Folsom to Sacramento set for Dec. 7 is closing in on its 9,000-runner registration cap, according to the Sacramento Running Association. Marathoners can register for $150 at www.runcim.org.

Spots are also still available for the CIM relay. The entry fee for the four-person relay is $190. The relay division cap is 1,000 teams.

The CIM has filled up for five consecutive years. While the number of marathons in the country has grown from 300 in 2000 to 1,100 in 2013, the CIM has remained a strong draw.

Part of the reason for the marathon’s popularity is the course itself. The CIM is viewed as a good way to earn a Boston Marathon qualifying time. The CIM is slightly downhill, and weather conditions are normally cool, leading to comparatively fast times.
