Re "Government Workers Waste Time" (Letters, Aug. 20): While I cannot speak for city employees or their labor relations division, my public sector colleagues and I rarely take breaks and consistently have work meetings during lunch or eat lunch at our desks while working. We do not automatically have jobs for life. Our labor contracts include legal and ethical clauses as grounds for termination or discipline.
We have annual performance reviews included in our Official Personnel File. We consistently work 10 to 12 hour workdays plus some weekends monthly. In my experience, our work hours and productivity match or surpass the private and nonprofit sectors.
Regarding accountability, the previous Department of Finance Director resigned after a DUI arrest. Yet, how many in the private sector who helped cause the recent financial crisis have served time in jail?
