Re "On a mission to get bikes off sidewalks" (The Conversation, Aug. 17): Bicyclists are their own worst enemies. By their behavior, they create the impression that they are self-righteous elitists. I write this as a former biker with more than 20 years of bicycle commuting experience.

Whenever bicyclists force pedestrians off sidewalks or glide through stop signs and red lights in full violation of the law, they are creating ill will among the non bicyclists with whom they share the road. There is a very small but definite danger involved in cycling on urban streets. I would like to feel that the motorists on those streets are favorably predisposed to share the road.
