The Buzz: Kamala Harris married in Santa Barbara ceremony

Published: Monday, Aug. 25, 2014 - 7:44 pm

California Attorney General Kamala Harris and attorney Douglas Emhoff were married Friday at the courthouse in Santa Barbara, her office said.

The attorney general’s sister, Maya Harris, officiated.

The wedding comes five months after Harris and Emhoff, partner in charge of the law firm Venable LLP’s Los Angeles office, were engaged.

Both Harris and Emhoff are 49.

The wedding was accompanied by little publicity, and Harris’ office provided few details other than a photograph of the newlyweds.

Harris, a former San Francisco district attorney, is widely considered a potential future candidate for governor or U.S. Senate.

It is Harris’ first marriage. Emhoff was previously divorced.

The wedding received little public attention, but it titillated the San Francisco Chronicle.

The paper said Emhoff “punctuated the service with the traditional Jewish breaking of the glass.”

The report continued, “Friends tell us Harris plans a mid-September party at the Presidio to celebrate with all her friends and political pals.”

BILL WATCH

Avoiding an election-year legislative debate over how California’s cap-and-trade program could affect gasoline prices, the leader of the state Senate has sidelined a bill that would have delayed a key aspect of California’s landmark emissions law. Assemblyman Henry Perea, D-Fresno, had sought a delay from the Jan. 1 applicability of greenhouse gas rules to fuels, but Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, said the bill would not be considered in the Senate.
