Leading Off: How concerned should 49ers fans really be?

Published: Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014 - 11:40 pm

The NFL preseason is not about wins and losses.

The outcome of these games are about as important as the miles of dirty, grass-stained equipment tape found on a locker room floor at the end of a contest.

But what does matter in the preseason – or in any practice – is the effort and performance of the players and the execution of offensive and defensive units.

So how concerned should 49ers fans be about quarterback Colin Kaepernick and the first-team offense?

What makes Kaepernick’s and 49ers’ preseason struggles so illuminating is that San Francisco’s NFC West nemesis, the Seahawks, have looked like an offensive machine the past two weeks.

Seattle starting quarterback Russell Wilson has completed 30 of 39 passes this preseason for 360 yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers. He also has run for three scores.

Kaepernick? He’s 12 of 22 for 115 yards, and he’s led the starting lineup to just six points on two field goals.

While Seattle’s engine is seemingly running in high gear, the 49ers’ offense is misfiring and leaking oil all over their new home in Santa Clara.

Is it time to panic? Of course not.

Fixing the 49ers’ offensive problems won’t be as simple as pulling up the shredded turf at Levi’s Stadium and re-sodding. But there is plenty of reason to believe this offense will take root again and resemble the Super Bowl contenders many believe the 49ers to be.

But with one preseason game left – more of a final dress rehearsal than a game – there is plenty of reason to be concerned.
