What happened to the DUI driver who killed William “Billy” Holston III in Rancho Cordova while he was riding his bike?

– Paula, Folsom

William Edward Holston III of Carmichael was killed in May 1999 when he was struck by a pickup truck as he was riding his bicycle on Mather Field Road shortly before 6:30 p.m.

According to a story in The Sacramento Bee, Holston, 21, was struck on the head by the side mirror of the truck, which had drifted off the road. The California Highway Patrol reported that Holston, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup, 41-year-old Clifford W. Johnson of Sacramento, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. According to Sacramento Superior Court online records, he pleaded no contest in June 1999 to a felony count of vehicular manslaughter and was sentenced to 16 months in state prison.
