  • State worker

Roughly 4,700 members of California Department of Forestry Firefighters will be receiving a 4 percent salary bump on Jan. 1, even though their current contract doesn’t specifically call for one. The raises will add $20.3 million to state payroll costs between now and the end of fiscal 2015-16, according to administration estimates. The firefighters union started quiet talks with the Brown administration last year, seeking to reopen the no-raise contract it extended in 2012.

The Buzz: Feds return to the Capitol – for ‘till tap’

Published: Friday, Aug. 29, 2014 - 6:15 pm

Capitol was in a pickle

during feds’ latest raid

For people who work at the state Capitol, the idea that federal agents are in “the building” raiding offices has become uncomfortably common in recent months. So it was with some despair Friday that they received word of another visit from the dreaded G-men.

But the target this time was the cafe vendor on the building’s sixth floor, not a legislator’s office. Turns out the U.S. Marshals Service had shown up for a “till tap,” taking money from the cash register to satisfy a court order. Deputy U.S. Marshal Frank Newsom said two agents seized money at O! Deli, on the sixth floor of the Capitol.

A union, Unite Here Local 49, applied for a written statement of judgment for $22,907 against the restaurant’s Dam Khan a day before the till tap, according to court filings.

The union had obtained two arbitration awards in a grievance arising from the termination of two employees from the restaurant. Khan could not be reached Friday for comment.

A sign on the door of the restaurant, which is popular with legislative staff, said it would remain closed “until further notice due to a personal emergency.”

SEN. DARRELL STEINBERG, joining his colleagues – who were pranking him – in voting against his own bill on initiatives. Democrats – Steinberg included – reversed their votes and approved the bill.
