Kings announce roster move to waive Wayne Ellington

A move that happened while I was on vacation became official today.

The Kings announced they waived guard Wayne Ellington.

Ellington was acquired from New York Aug. 6 along with forward-center Jeremy Tyler and the unencumbered rights to the Knicks’ 2016 second-round draft pick for forwards Quincy Acy and Travis Outlaw.

ESPN reported Ellington was waived Sunday, the last day the Kings could use the “waive-and-stretch” provision on a player.

That would allow the Kings to spread the $2.5 million Ellington was due this coming season over three years for salary cap purposes.

The Kings are trying to stay below the luxury-tax line of $76.829 million and were about $2 million below the line before waiving Ellington.

The Kings will drop further once a trade of Jason Terry to Houston becomes official.

That flexibility would allow the Kings to add to their roster, including the long expected deal to bring Omri Casspi back to Sacramento.
