Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today:
Jump in temps: So much for the low 90s. The National Weather Service had been predicting a week of days around 90 degrees, which is normal for early September. Well, forget-about-it. The temperature was a rather hot 96 in Sacramento on Wednesday. Look for temperatures in the mid-90s through Sunday, the NWS says now.
Debate tonight: Gov. Jerry Brown and Neel Kashkari will take part in their first – and likely only – debate today in Sacramento. Two months before Election Day, less than 60 percent of likely voters have an opinion of Kashkari, according to a new Field Poll, and the Republican trails Brown by 16 percentage points. Watch the debate live at 7 p.m. at sacbee.com/live, courtesy of the California Channel. A Sacramento Bee live chat begins at 6 p.m. Bee staff writer David Siders offers a preview of the debate at sacbee.com.
Strong-mayor backing: An old friend and an old foe have thrown their support behind Kevin Johnson’s strong-mayor effort. The Sacramento-Sierra Building Trades & Construction Council, a coalition of more than two dozen unions, announced Wednesday it was supporting Johnson’s November ballot measure to make the mayor more powerful. That group was the lead opponent of Johnson’s first strong-mayor plan in 2009 and also fought subsequent plans by Johnson to increase his office’s authority; those plans would have granted Johnson more powers than the current proposal. The campaign also received a financial boost from the region’s pre-eminent land developer, Angelo K. Tsakopoulos, who last week donated $100,000 to the strong-mayor campaign.
Search for kidnapper : Sacramento County sheriff’s detectives are continuing their search for a man who kidnapped a Carmichael girl from her home in the middle of the night over the weekend. “This is priority No. 1 right now,” said sheriff’s spokeswoman Lisa Bowman. There is no known motive for the kidnapping. The stranger who took the youngster eventually let her go.
Classical music boost: Three classical music organizations in the Sacramento region will share in a $1.1 million bequest from the late J. David Ramsey, a former U.S. Forest Service worker. It’s the most significant gift ever earmarked for classical music through the Sacramento Region Community Foundation, which has been overseeing such gifts since 1983.
Local sports: Oklahoma City Energy FC at Sacramento Republic FC (7:30 p.m., Bonney Field). A victory by Republic FC (16-6-4) will lock up second place in USL Pro and secure a second-round home playoff match. And a victory or a tie will extend Republic FC’s unbeaten streak to 10 consecutive matches. The match will be streamed live at SacRepublicFC.com/matchday.
Both the A’s and the Giants are off Thursday.
