Barnes & Noble Bookstore will host a "Breaking Dawn" party in celebration of the final installment of the Twilight Saga book release of Stephenie Meyer's "Breaking Dawn," set for midnight Friday at 6111 Sunrise Blvd., Citrus Heights.
Festivities will kick off with prom-themed activities and contests from 10 p.m. to midnight, and Twilight Saga fans are encouraged to come in costume.
The event also will be a fundraiser for Mills Middle School of Rancho Cordova, the Sacramento Academic Vocational Academy in Sacramento and the Orangevale Open K-8 School in Orangevale. Barnes & Noble will donate a portion of the proceeds of book sales made from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Meet the authors
Authors Jody and Ric Hornor will discuss and sign copies of their new book, "The Golden Hub, Sacramento," from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Folsom History Museum, 823 Sutter St.
The book chronicles the birth and development of Sacramento city and county from Johan Sutter's 1839 New Helvetia and through the Gold Rush to the end of the 19th century.

Blood drive set
The El Dorado Hills Community Services District will sponsor a blood drive for BloodSource from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Community Services District Pavilions Building, 1021 Harvard Way, El Dorado Hills.
Donors must be 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and present photo identification. Donors will receive a coupon for a free pint of Baskin-Robbins ice cream.

The University of California Cooperative Extension master food preservers will offer free classes on the art and science of safe canning, freezing and drying techniques from 10 a.m. to noon at the Cooperative Extension office, 311 Fair Lane, Placerville.

Diabetes education program
Marshall Medical Center will offer a "Smart Start: The Path to Diabetes Control" class from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Placerville area.

Ticket cost is $10 per person at the door only. Students in graduation classes 2008-12, with photo identification, are encouraged to attend.
