Dr. Michael Wilkes, director of global health and professor of medicine at UC Davis school of medicine, answers your questions about health care.

Q: I have lived for the past 30+ years with the results of a traumatic brain injury and "Attention Deficit Disorder, Inattentive Type". Although the doctors still debate (at my expense) which of these disorders is primary, I have still to find anyone--at least inside the Kaiser system--who will refer me, or apparently anyone with adult ADD, to an appropriate therapist, coach, or cognitive-behavioral "expert". After many attempts, and appeals, I still get a stone wall whenever I ask for this. The stimulant medication no longer works well for me. I do find meditation, exercize, and acceptance of my condition helpful emotionally. But how can one live successfully and productively, not simply adequately, with such a mental health condition? I fear my own lack of results may be very similar to others with a long-term mental health condition, not easily treatable by medication alone. Any hopeful, or helpful suggestions? Thanks.
