What to make of 007

Published: Friday, Nov. 14, 2008 - 12:00 am | Page 10H

James Bond has been around for a really long time - we're talking the early 1960s.

To be sure, Sean Connery was cocking his full, dark brows at all kinds of femme fatales when the parents of most of today's high schoolers were themselves in high school.

But for better or worse, the franchise endures.

The catchphrases, cars, martinis, women, more cars and briefcases full of international plunder and top-secret info are all facets worn into the cultural conscience that no one is escaping from, ever.

So to see just how strong the legacy of Bond is, here is the agent's status, according to a handful of Sacramento teens.

They're shooting straight from the hip; no torture, fierce beatings or truth serums were necessary.

What do you think of when you hear "James Bond"?

Matt Vincent, Jesuit High School: "I think 'Sean Connery.' He's the quintessential Bond. I like the series a lot. I have posters in my room and everything. One is 'Casino Royale' (2006), and then 'From Russia With Love' (1963) is in my closet. I saw 'Dr. No' (1962) on TV a few years ago, and I've been hooked since."

Danielle Wordelman, Loretto High School: "I don't know - I've never seen a single Bond movie. But I do know that I love every Bond car. I wish I had an Aston Martin. No, I want an Aston Martin with missiles and an ejector seat. That's just the epitome of cool, that's subzero cool ... you'd have the ability to eject your date from the car."

Eric Orosco, Rosemont High School: "I mean, the franchise is huge... and overrated. The whole 'attractive guy who gets all the ladies while stopping communists and other people,' I don't buy that. I've seen 'The World Is Not Enough' (1999), 'Diamonds Are Forever' (1971), basically the old-school ones, and 'Casino Royale.' And I just sort of yawned a lot. My dad likes Bond, and that's why I saw 'Casino Royale.' And once, I watched a Bond marathon on TV because there was just nothing else on; I guess that was sad."

Patrick Collins, Met Sacramento High School: "Really, my father is a good fan of Bond, a much bigger fan than me."

What do you think of the latest Bond, Daniel Craig?

Matt: "I think he's good, he's a little less refined. (Craig) is pretty smart about it, the way the actor takes it in a new direction for a new century."

Danielle: "He's a little ugly for me. ... I'm in the minority, aren't I?"

Eric: "He's OK, I guess. I don't care about him that much, but from the older Bonds I've seen, he isn't as suave."

Patrick: "He does well, he's interesting. I have to take a step back from 'Casino Royale' because I'm not used to the still-learning Bond."

What buzz have you been hearing about "Quantum of Solace" (2008) at school?

Matt: "People are saying that it looks good. And they're looking at it like an individual movie rather than a series. They aren't talking about, 'Oh, I wonder what's going to happen next.' It's more like, 'That movie looks awesome.' "

Danielle: "I've heard people going crazy ... and I guess I can see why everyone would be so attracted to the glitz and glamour. He travels around the whole world driving nice cars and picking up women. Everyone wants to do that."

Eric: "I really haven't heard anything. ... I remember after people saw 'Casino Royale,' there was a lot of talk about it. But before they went, it was, like, just something people went to see, like another movie."

Patrick: "I've only heard a little bit of it, and that was excitement. One of my friends is taking all his friends to see it for his birthday party"
