Body found in river believed to be man from car crash

Published: Friday, Nov. 07, 2008 | Page 2B

Authorities found a body Thursday in the Sacramento River a half-mile south of Vieras Resort, the California Highway Patrol said.

Authorities said they believe the body is that of a 48-year-old Discovery Bay man whose car plunged into the water along Grand Island Road, three miles southeast of Highway 160, on Oct. 26.

CHP Officer Mike Bradley said the Coast Guard received a call about noon from someone who spotted the body.

Authorities are working to confirm whether it is Steven Wayne Coward, Bradley said.

Coward was northbound in a silver 2003 Mercedes-Benz on Grand Island Road when he failed to negotiate a sharp turn, and the vehicle overturned and went down the embankment into the river, authorities said.

The car and the body of his passenger, Jeri Joanne Lyons-Thompson, 45, of Brentwood, were recovered earlier.
