As an 18-year-old high school senior faced charges Tuesday that he killed his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend, the dead woman's brother succumbed to injuries suffered in a car crash hours after the double homicide.

Reyes Garcia Carrillo was formally charged with the murders of Jennifer Carmen Carrigan and Steven Daniel Furtado during an appearance in Plumas Superior Court, according to court records.

According to a criminal complaint filed by Plumas District Attorney Jeff Cunan, Carrillo used a knife in the killings, which occurred late Saturday or early Sunday in the tiny mountain town of Chester, 150 miles north of Sacramento.

Carrillo was arrested just four hours after Carrigan's mother found the bodies of the young couple inside her home around noon Sunday, authorities said. Furtado had driven to Chester from his home in Willows on Saturday to take Carrigan to her senior prom. Both were 18.

Sunday evening, Carrigan's 20-year-old brother, Billy, crashed his pickup truck as he sped home from Berkeley to be with his family, authorities said.

He lost control of the truck on a sharp curve and slammed into several trees, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Billy Carrigan was airlifted to Enloe Medical Center in Chico, where he was pronounced dead Tuesday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said. He was a student at Berkeley City College, not the University of California, Berkeley, as earlier reported.

Investigators are still trying to determine a motive behind the killings of the young couple. Cunan told The Bee that Carrillo and Carrigan dated and that "somewhere in there is a likely motive, but I wouldn't want to speculate beyond that."

Carrillo did not enter a plea during his arraignment and was ordered held without bail, Cunan said.

Carrillo faces two counts of murder and a count of burglary for entering an inhabited home with the purpose of committing a felony, according to the complaint.

Cunan said double homicides are "very rare" in Plumas County and that the case has "really upset" many residents.

"It's a kind of crime we don't expect to see here and I found people aren't necessarily morbidly interested in these things beyond trying to deal with the trauma," he said.

Carrillo's attorney could not be reached for comment.
