Satya Wati Chand's story is a cautionary tale for tax time, when feelings about the collectors tend to intensify a bit.
In the Antelope woman's June 20 discussion with Internal Revenue Service counter employee Larissa Trush, things got heated.
Finally, Chand quit resorting to words and, according to a charge later lodged against her in federal court, she "forcibly assaulted Trush by threatening her, striking her with a purse, and throwing a bottle of water at her."
This, obviously, is not the recommended course to settling your differences with the tax agency.
The 48-year-old Chand was sentenced Tuesday to six months' probation under the supervision of U.S. Magistrate Judge Dale A. Drozd.
She pleaded guilty on Nov. 27 to misdemeanor assault of a federal officer.
While awaiting resolution of the matter, Chand has been undergoing court-ordered mental health treatment.
Drozd noted Tuesday he has had positive reports about her progress and said she need not continue with counseling.
She is to stay away from the IRS' Watt Avenue offices during her probation unless Drozd gives his consent.
Defense attorney Caro Marks told the judge her client wanted him to know "she's very sorry she blew her stack."
Marks said when dealing with the agency "it sometimes seems a person is reduced to a Social Security number."
Chand's frustration in confronting "a Byzantine bureaucracy," plus a problem understanding exactly what she was being told Hindi is her first language contributed to her behavior, Marks said.
"You must heed my final admonition," Drozd told Chand.
"That sort of thing can't happen again."
