Politicians, parents, and students plan to gather at a Natomas park this morning to do something that children do every day walk to school.
Hundreds of elementary school students will wave banners as they make their way on International Walk to School Day from South Natomas Community Park, 2921 Truxel Road, to Bannon Creek Elementary School, 2775 Millcreek Drive.
The walk, which begins at 7:15 a.m., is expected to include Rep. Doris Matsui, D-Sacramento; state Sen. Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento; Caltrans Director Will Kempton; and Natomas Unified School District Superintendent Steve Farrar.
Natomas officials said in a news release that nationwide efforts are under way to promote walking and bike riding for exercise and to reduce traffic congestion.
California Department of Transportation officials are expected to announce$46 million in federal Safe Routes to Schools grants during a rally at the school.
