Two community meetings are scheduled this week to educate Natomas residents about upcoming flood insurance requirements.
Because that area is at higher risk of flood than previously thought, federal officials are expected on Dec. 8 to remap the Natomas basin as a floodplain.
Both meetings, which are hosted by the city of Sacramento and Sacramento County, will cover the upcoming remapping and how it will affect property owners, development and flood insurance requirements. When the remapping occurs, Natomas property owners with federally backed mortgages will be required to buy flood insurance, according to a release from the city of Sacramento.
Flood insurance will be required until local officials strengthen surrounding levees to provide 100-year flood projection, or the ability to withstand a flood that has a 1 percent chance of striking in any given year.
The area is expected to be brought back to 100-year flood protection when upgrades on 25 miles of levees around Natomas are completed. The upgrade is expected to be finished by 2011.
The meetings are:
6 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the South Natomas Community Center, 2921 Truxel Road, Sacramento.
6 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 20 at Inderkum High School, 2500 New Market Dr., Sacramento.
