LINCOLN State and local officials broke ground Friday morning on the $325 million Lincoln bypass, a project in the works since 1972.
Scheduled to be completed in 2013, the nearly 12-mile road will skirt Lincoln on the west side from Industrial Avenue to Sheridan, where the bypass will link back to Highway 65. Commuter and big-rig traffic will be diverted from Lincoln's downtown.
In addition to making the highway safer, officials said the bypass will ease bumper-to-bumper traffic in downtown Lincoln and help businesses there.
The bypass received $14.6 million in federal funding and $192.8 million from the state, including $78.6 million from the voter-approved transportation infrastructure bonds.
