Highway officials will take the unusual step of closing Interstate 80 in Rocklin several nights this week and next as part of ongoing construction of a Sierra College Boulevard interchange.
The freeway closures -- eastbound lanes this week, westbound next week -- are scheduled for night and early morning when traffic is generally lightest, said Dave Palmer, project manager for the city of Rocklin.
"Avoiding it is probably the easiest way," he said. "But if people can't avoid it, there will be a detour."
Crews will close the eastbound lanes at 11 p.m. Thursday and reopen them at 5 a.m. Friday.
The eastbound lanes then will be closed again at midnight Friday night and reopened at 5 a.m. Saturday.
The westbound lanes will be closed twice next week.
The first closure will be at 9 p.m. Monday, with reopening at 5 a.m. Tuesday. Those lanes will close again at 9 p.m. Tuesday and reopen at 5 a.m. next Wednesday.
Crews will use the closure times to build the support for the new overpass.
Detours will be marked each night and will be staffed by police and California Highway Patrol officers.
On the nights of eastbound closures, traffic will exit the freeway at Rocklin Road, then go north on Sierra College Boulevard.
During westbound closures, traffic will be detoured to the Sierra College Boulevard exit, north to Granite Drive, and west to the Rocklin Road interchange.
The project, under way since March, includes a new interchange, new ramps, widening of the freeway, bicycle lanes and pedestrian sidewalks.
The project is expected to be completed late next year.
