METAIRIE, La. – Three New Orleans pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Zephyrs defeated the River Cats 6-0 Saturday night in the opener of a four-game series at Zephyr Field.

Zephyrs starter Adam Bostick allowed one hit in three innings. Ivan Maldonado (1-2) gave up three hits in three innings, and Jose Santiago allowed one hit in three innings for his first save.

The Zephyrs hit three home runs off Lenny DiNardo (2-1), who gave up 12 hits and six runs in six innings.

The River Cats' winning streak ended at three games, and New Orleans extended its winning streak to four.

"We swung the bats, hit a lot of balls right at them," River Cats manager Todd Steverson said. "What can you say? Hitting ain't easy. You're not going to get 12, 15 hits every night. You've got to take advantage of opportunities when you have them, though."

Bostick retired the first eight batters and allowed only Justin Knoedler's infield single through three innings. Bostick was then removed because Zephyrs manager Ken Oberkfell wanted to get his bullpen some work.

New Orleans had staked Bostick to a 3-0 lead in the second on Fernando Tatis' two-run homer and Gustavo Molina's solo shot.

The River Cats had a chance to cut into the deficit in the fourth, when Kevin Melillo and Jeff Baisley began the inning with consecutive singles off Maldonado. After Carlos González popped out, Wes Bankston singled to left, loading the bases. The threat dissipated when Brooks Conrad and Joe Gaetti struck out.

Maldonado and Santiago combined to retire 13 consecutive batters until Travis Buck singled with two outs in the eighth.

The Zephyrs scored two runs in the fourth, and Valentino Pascucci's solo homer made it 6-0 in the fifth. New Orleans loaded the bases in the eighth, but Kiko Caléro struck out Argenis Reyes and Jesus Feliciano.

Steverson said he was pleased that DiNardo worked out of a bases-loaded, none-out situation in the third without allowing a run. "But," he added, "the overall outcome of the game was still that we lost. You take the positives, and you get ready for tomorrow."
