METAIRIE, La. Five Sacramento pitchers combined on a six-hitter, but it was right fielder Travis Buck who could have gotten the save in the River Cats' 3-2 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Monday night at Zephyr Field.
Dallas Braden's return to the starting rotation from Oakland's bullpen necessitated a pitching-by-committee outing, and Buck made it a success by throwing out the potential tying run at third base to end the game.
Braden, who was on a low pitch count after making five consecutive relief appearances with the A's, threw three scoreless innings, as did his replacement, winner Brad Knox (3-1).
Kiko Calero, making his second appearance since arriving on a rehab (shoulder) assignment Saturday, pitched one inning, yielding the Zephyrs' only run.
Ryan Wing pitched a scoreless eighth, and Jerry Blevins pitched the ninth to get his fifth save despite allowing a run.
The River Cats (22-16) had a 3-1 lead when Chris Aguila led off the bottom of the ninth with a single against Blevins. After Gustavo Molina struck out, Anderson Hernández singled Aguila to second.
After Anderson Machado flied out to left, Reyes singled to right, scoring Aguila, but Buck's throw to third caught Hernández between second and third, and third baseman Jeff Baisley fielded the throw on a hop and threw to shortstop Gregorio Petit, who tagged out Hernández to end the game.
"As an outfielder, you've got to be anticipating the play," Buck said. "As soon it was hit, I knew I wanted to make a strong throw to third to hold the runner at second. It was really a baserunning mistake on their part."
River Cats manager Todd Steverson praised Buck as well as Baisley for snagging the throw and Petit for being alert.
"They all did a good job," Steverson said.
