The California School Boards Association reports that voters approved a record number of local school district bonds Nov. 4 despite the struggling economy. Of the 86 local bonds on the ballot, 78 were approved – $16.8 billion worth. Voters also mustered the required two-thirds vote to pass 17 of 21 parcel taxes for schools.

CAPITOL ALERT

Assembly Speaker Karen Bass mostly laughed Wednesday at the suggestion that termed-out Assemblywoman Nicole Parra of Hanford could receive an appointment in the Obama administration. Bass banished fellow Democrat Parra to an office outside the Capitol this year, and Parra retaliated by supporting a Republican to replace her in her Central Valley district. BALLOT WATCH

The latest from the secretary of state in close races: Republican Tom McClintock leads Democrat Charlie Brown by 592 votes in the 4th Congressional District. In the 10th Assembly District, Republican Jack Sieglock leads Democrat Alyson Huber by 1,007 votes. Proposition 11 maintains a 168,386-vote lead.
