Oregon cross country runner Alex Kosinski (Oak Ridge High School) won the women's title in the NCAA Division I West Region championships Saturday at Stanford.
Kosinski completed the six-kilometer course in 19 minutes, 59.01 seconds. The sophomore became Oregon's first West Region women's champion since Milena Glusac in 1994.
Oregon finished second to top-ranked Washington in the women's team standings. UC Davis placed sixth, with Kaitlin Gregg (12th) and Kim Conley (16th) becoming the first Aggies to advance to the Division I national meet Nov. 24 in Terre Haute, Ind. Sacramento State finished 15th.
In the men's race, Oregon's Galen Rupp repeated as champion, finishing the 10K race in 27:41.24 and leading the Ducks to their third consecutive West Region title. UCD finished 11th, and Sac State was 18th.
Sac City wins Mid-Empire football title
Chavous McWhorter scored on a 23-yard run, Edward Russell had a one-yard touchdown run, and Derek Carothers kicked three field goals as host Sacramento City College (5-5, 3-1) beat rival American River College (6-4, 2-2) 22-7 to win the Mid-Empire Conference for the second time in three seasons. SCC will face host Modesto in the Graffiti Bowl on Saturday. The Panthers also announced All-America nose tackle Akiem Hicks has verbally committed to LSU.
Montana ends volleyball rut vs. Sac State
Host Montana ended an 18-match women's volleyball losing streak against Sac State, winning 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 in Big Sky Conference play. The Grizzlies (12-12, 8-6) limited the Hornets (9-21, 7-7) to an .062 hitting percentage.
UCD hangs on for water polo win
Six Aggies scored as No. 11 UCD took a five-goal lead and held on to beat No. 16 and host Santa Clara 6-5. The Aggies (11-14, 8-4) handed the Broncos (14-12, 8-5) their sixth consecutive loss.
