Regional Digest: Monarchs' Lawson wins sportsmanship award

Monarchs guard Kara Lawson was named the recipient of the 2009 Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award, the WNBA announced Tuesday.

Designed to honor a player who exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court, the award is named for the late Kim Perrot, who helped guide the Houston Comets to their first two WNBA championships before dying in August 1999 after a seven-month battle with cancer.

Sac State hangs onto second in golf tourney

Julie Shutler and Kercia Brakel carded 75s to help Sacramento State hold onto second place at the Inland Cup in Pullman, Wash.

The Hornets (613) are tied with Nevada and trail only Idaho (601) entering today's final round.

Samantha Saffold shot a 78 and is tied for 10th at 153. Shutler is 13th at 154. Brooke Green (77) and Justine Chen (79) are tied for 14th at 155.

• UC Davis' Alice Kim shot a 74 and is tied for third at 145 after two rounds of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Littleton, Colo.

Chelsea Stelzmiller of the Aggies shot a 76 and is tied for fifth at 149.

The Aggies (599) are third behind Baylor (598) and Denver (585).

Hornets sweep in volleyball

Janelle Currey had 15 kills and Desiree Hoyum 13 to lead host Sac State (8-6) to a 25-15, 25-13, 25-15 volleyball win over Nevada (4-9).
