Q: If at the end of an evening together I invite a man into my apartment, why does he always assume I want to sleep with him? Often I just want to continue the conversation, maybe over a glass of wine. For some reason, men think I'm inviting them in for sex. It ends up being awkward and embarrassing. How can I make it clear that's not the case without alienating him?

Marry adventure and romance on a couples getaway that is sure to leave you with an appreciation of home and the thrill of temporary escape. You don't have to go around the world to cherish a little alone time, but it helps. Even if you don't leave your cozy king-size bed decked with premium Egyptian cotton, ridiculously soft sheets, just being a half dozen time zones away from the undone renovations and house work is vacation alone.

According to a recent survey, the ideal age difference between a couple is when the man is 4 years and (this is the sort of weird part) four months older than the woman, which means that my ideal mate was born sometime in February 1982.

Julie Klausner gave some advice on a recent podcast of what not to say to a friend going through a breakup: "Don't say now's the time to learn a new language." If, while going through a breakup, someone told me that while I may have just lost the love of my life, at least it affords me an opportunity to brush up on my Portuguese, I would kill them, and then myself.

Communication between individuals can be a powerful tool - on one hand it can nurture positive feelings of love, admiration and respect. On the other hand though, it can create negative emotions such as hurt feelings or anger. Learning an effective way to communicate will help prevent conflict from damaging your relationship. The rules below are meant to give you additional tools to help your communication as a couple. Remember, good communication will require the two of you to both contribute equally. Without both of you fully contributing, you can decrease the likelihood of having quality communication.

Q: I was single most of my life. I raised my children alone. Throughout my life, I was frequently invited to events and attended alone. I have reached the point in my life where my daughter's friends are getting married.

I understand why people love the concept of "fate." It feels good to think someone's been earmarked for you, and that unseen forces are, even now, guiding you two hopeless romantics toward each other. It's an appealing, plot-worthy idea. Unfortunately, that's bunk - and worse, it's bunk that puts you in the weakest position of all. Because by believing this theory, you willingly renounce freedom, choice, and most importantly, action. You'll sit back and figure fate will find you. Wrong.
