A VOTER'S GUIDE | ELECTION DAY: NOV. 7

Mailing it in

Election Day is morphing into Election Month as more and more Californians are choosing the mailbox over the ballot box to cast their votes. The snowballing trend toward absentee ballots is changing the way candidates campaign and the way voters vote.

In the June 6 primary, 47 percent of California ballots were absentee, up from 27 percent in 2002. In some counties -- among them Sacramento, El Dorado, Placer and Yuba -- absentee ballots outnumbered those cast at the polls.

California's absentee voters can submit their ballots up to 29 days before the election, meaning a fair number will be signed, sealed and delivered before many campaigns even begin to heat up. Read more
