Every time a baby is born, Brahms' lullaby trickles through the intercom at Sutter Memorial Hospital in east Sacramento.
On Sunday, the welcoming serenade resonated with a greater intensity on the third-floor maternity ward. A classic guitarist and flute player performed exclusively for the all the new moms, and gift baskets with oatmeal cookies and teas also arrived, courtesy of the hospital.
"We want to be able to honor and show our gratitude to our new mothers," said Linda Pinkham, a hospital spokeswoman who has helped coordinate the annual Mother's Day celebration for new moms over the past 10 years.
During the first 12 hours after midnight Sunday, four babies were born at Sutter Memorial Hospital. On Sunday afternoon there were nearly three dozen newborns and their mothers in the maternity ward.
Inside one room, 3-day-old Itzel Natali Zamora closed her brown eyes and nestled her tiny crop of black hair close to her mother, Irene Rodriguez.
Itzel, which is an Aztec name that translates to "unique," is the first-born child of Rodriguez, 27, and her longtime boyfriend, Jaime Zamora, 23.
"It's a whole new life ahead of us," said Rodriguez, who teaches kindergarten in south Sacramento and planned to deliver close to summer break. "She is our whole world."
But an intense, 30-hour-labor tested the hopes of the young couple:
Their baby was in the wrong position. Her heart rate had become distressed, and Rodriguez developed a fever that forced doctors to perform an emergency Caesarean section.
At 3:53 p.m. Thursday, Itzel arrived.
"Once I had her in my arms, I forgot about everything all the pain," the new mother recalled as she cradled her daughter Sunday. "I feel very lucky."
A few doors down, Svetlana Chernioglo, 31, leaned her day-old son, Nicholas, against her shoulder, patting his back to draw a stubborn little burp. The mother's movements were swift and expert. Nicholas, swathed in a white baby blanket and with a head full of sandy brown hair, is Chernioglo's sixth son with her husband, Fedor.
He was born at 8:54 a.m. Saturday, after 10 hours of labor.
Soon, Nicholas will join the Chernioglo brothers: Tommy, 10; Villy, 9; Jessie, 7; Timothy, 5; and James, 2.
"For me this year, it's even a happier Mother's Day," Chernioglo said from her hospital bed. "I got a gift."
