1. Deficit Drama VO/SOT
A state lawmaker reportedly said earlier this week that regardless of a perceived revenue shortfall, the state is actually taking in more money from tax revenues this year to date than by this time last year. No Special Session- At a meeting yesterday afternoon, the so-called Big 5 (the Governor and legislative leaders) decided not to call a special session to correct the state's now out of balance budget, but instead agreed to meet weekly among themselves to monitor the state government's precarious finances.
Inmate Health care- The federal judge who determined California's prison inmate health care system to be unconstitutionally deficient, yesterday ordered further proceedings to determine how his appointed Receiver will be empowered to draw state money to design, construct, and operate new inmate health care facilities. Receiver J. Clark Kelso is seeking an a immediate release of $250 million, though his total request for funds is about $8 billion.
