OFFICIALS ANNOUNCING RECORD RIDERSHIP FOR AMTRAK ROUTES IN CALIFORNIA SAY INCREASED USE OF THE RAIL SYSTEM WILL REDUCE THE NEED FOR GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES, BUT NEITHER AMTRAK'S CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER NOR THE DIRECTOR OF THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION COULD SAY HOW MUCH SUBSIDIES WILL FALL. THE STATE SPENDS MORE THAN $80 MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR TO SUBSIDIZE AMTRAK OPERATIONS IN CALIFORNIA.
