State GOP Slams Gov- The California Republic Party Board on Friday voted 14-2 to formally oppose Governor Schwarzenegger's tax increase proposals to balance the state budget deficit. Tax increases include a one and a half cent sales tax hike, an oil severance tax (taxing crude as its pumped from the ground in California) and an increase in vehicle registration fees.
McClintock Declares Win- State Senator Tom McClintock's campaign is all but declaring him to be the winner of California's Fourth Congressional District race with challenger Charley Brown. A campaign spokesman for McClintock says the Senator's slim lead is mathematically impossible to overcome considering the small number of uncounted votes. Brown points out that because the election victory margin was so small, a mandatory recount of ten percent of the ballots in the district, to verity that hand counts of ballots match machine counts, and isn't conceding anything.
In the State Senate's 19th District, former Assemblyman Tony Strickland continues to lead challenger Hannah Beth Jackson, according to latest figures posted on the Secretary of State's website. A Strickland win would deny Senate Democrats their hoped for 2/3 super-majority in that house, allowing them to pass budget and tax bills regardless of Republican opposition.
Prepare for The Global Warming- Governor Schwarzenegger has ordered state agencies to prepare for the purported impacts of Global Warming, including assisting engineering efforts to build new dikes and levees and highway routes to prevent flooding from anticipated rising sea levels, and on which endangered species to focus habitat mitigation efforts.
GOVERNOR'S SCHEDULE
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is in Los Angeles this morning to meet with Republic of Korea President Lee Myung-bak. He will be in Sacramento later this afternoon, presumably to meet with legislative leaders for more budget talks.
LEGISLATURE'S SCHEDULE
The Legislature has been called to special session to close the state's $11.2 billion budget deficit this fiscal year. But Democrats and Republicans remain deadlocked over proposed tax hikes. Tentative floor session votes have been scheduled for tomorrow in the Assembly and Senate, the last day the existing Legislature can logistically act before the Thanksgiving holiday and the swearing in of the newly elected Legislature on Dec. 1st.
