1. Swearing the Lawmakers VO/SOT
The new legislature, members of both the Senate and Assembly, will be sworn-in during separate ceremonies at Noon today. Usually, the legislature immediately adjourns for the rest of the month of December after being sworn-in, but Governor Schwarzenegger will reportedly call for a special session for lawmakers to revise the out-of balance state budget. 2. Governor on Budget VO/SOT
After visiting a rooftop solar power installation this morning in southern California, Governor Schwarzenegger will hold a press conference this morning at the capitol to discuss the state budget. The current year's budget is an estimated $11.2 billion dollars in deficit, and the state could run out of money to pay its bill by the end of February. Efforting soundbites and video.
3. Legislative Staff Raises VO/SOT
Despite the growing state budget deficit, state lawmakers have increased salaries for more than 200 members of their Senate and Assembly legislative staffs during the past year. More than 100 other were promoted to higher paying staff positions. Efforting soundbites and video.

State lawmakers and officials representing college teachers unions will discuss the effect of proposed budget cuts to the state's public colleges and universities. Efforting soundbites and video.

Fundraisers Start- Just hours after his scheduled swearing this morning, the new Senate President Pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) has scheduled a fundraiser for this evening. Highest prices tickets are $50,000. Proceeds will go to the California Democratic Party.
CHP Maximum Enforcement-As of Sunday morning, the CHP reports there were 16 auto-related fatalities in California (compared to 24 over the same time last year) during this year's Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement Period, which started on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. and ended at Midnight this morning. Over the same time, there were 1397 DUI arrests, compared t0 1497 last year. The final Maximum Enforcement Period report will be issued later this morning.
McClintock Announces Win- State Senator and California Fourth Congressional District Representative-elect Tom McClintock will formally announce his victory this afternoon in Roseville.
GOVERNOR'S SCHEDULE
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is in Fontana this morning for a press conference at the ProLogis warehouse, to discuss the completion of a solar power rooftop installation. Later this morning, he will discuss the state budget deficit in a presser at the capitol.
