LAWMAKER RAISES? VO/SOT
The Citizens Compensation Commission will meet in Van Nuys to discuss and vote on whether to raise the annual salaries of state legislators and constitutional officers (governor, attorney general, controller, etc), and if so by how much. The state is currently facing about a nine billion dollar deficit in the coming fiscal year. Any raises that are voted upon will take effect in December 2008. Efforting soundbites and video from lawmakers and tax payer advocates in Sacramento about the hearing in Van Nuys and the idea of contemplating such raises with the looming fiscal crisis.
GOVERNOR'S REDISTRICTING AND BUDGET PLANS VO/SOT
As the governor prepares tonight for a fundraiser featuring port and cigars to raise money for his ballot initiatives including a measure to grant the power to draw senate and assembly districts to an independent commission instead of the lawmakers as it's currently done, Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez and Republican Leader Mike Villines are attempting to negotiate a legislative plan that includes term limit modifications, which would end up on the same ballot. The governor is also planning soon to soon unveil his budget reform legislation which would require legislative then voter approval. Efforting soundbites and video.
GREEN JOBS FOR EARTH DAY VO/SOT
Advocates for vocational education, or Career Tech Ed as it is now known, will discuss legislation and other policy efforts to promote teaching students to prepare for the state's green economy, or environmentally friendly business, through teaching them the skills required for such jobs as solar panel installation, engineering and mechanics. Efforting soundbites and video.
CATHOLICS AND PLANNED PARENTHOOD PROTEST UNSCRIPTED
Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California will march on the State Capitol to protest cuts to Medi-Cal, which will result in cuts to doctor's and clinic's reimbursements for treating poor patients. The California Catholic Conference will also rally at the State Capitol against cuts to the aged and disabled and in support of a bill that would allow for babies up to one week old to be given up by their mothers at a fire station or hospital with no questions asked. Current law requires the baby be 72 hours old or less. Efforting video from each rally and soundbites unscripted.
SENATE PRO TEMPORE USING STAFF ILLEGALLY? VO/SOT
Senate President Pro Tempore Don Perata (D-Oakland) delivered letters to several senators telling them their chiefs of staff must report to one of his senate staffers for campaign work and that this was not an option. The Perata campaign also attempted to use a senate staffer to translate a campaign related phone message. Use of tax payer paid senate staff for campaign purposes is illegal. Efforting soundbites and video.
