1. DRUNK DISORDERLY CHIROPRACTORS VO/SOT
The state board that licenses chiropractors and sets state standards for the profession took no action against a chiropractor after he had three drunk driving charges, until he allegedly drugged a woman and assaulted her in his office. The chairs of the Assembly and Senate Business and Professions Committees have been critical of the board's lack of enforcement on rogue chiropractors and have cut the board's funding, which the executive director blames for lack of enforcement. Efforting soundbites and video.
2. GOLD STAR LICENSE PLATE VO/SOT
Two state senators will present a bill to the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee, allowing the California Department of Veterans Affairs to issue Gold Star Family license plates to families with members killed in military service. 22 states have similar laws. The plates would be paid for with private funds. Efforting soundbites and video.
3. END OF LIFE OPTIONS VO/SOT
The Assembly Judiciary Committee will hear a bill that would require physicians and health care providers to inform patients who request all their existing legal options regarding their end-of-life care, including being sedated into unconsciousness, voluntarily refusing food or water, and refusing life-extending treatments. Efforting soundbites and video.
4. BUDGET CUTS-KIDS' HEALTH CARE VO/SOT
A coalition of groups that support publicly-funded health care programs for children will discuss the impact on those programs due to the governor's proposed 10 percent cuts from all state programs. Efforting soundbites and video.
5. SALVIA BAN BILL VO/SOT
A bill to make it a misdemeanor to sell or distribute the herbal drug Salvia Divinorum to minors will be heard this morning in the Senate Public Safety Committee. Rail Security Grants The Director of the Governor's Office of Homeland Security will announce multi-million dollar grant awards to the Capitol Corridor and San Joaquin Corridor rail systems. The OHS determines how to distribute the one billion dollars set aside for transit, port and rail security in the $20 billion dollar voter-approved Proposition 1B infrastructure bond measure.
Senate Republicans Economic Plan Senate Republicans will discuss measures to reduce what they call bureaucratic red tape for small businesses and allowing flexibility for workers to help stimulate California's economy. They say this rather than increased taxes will improve the state's deficit by encouraging consumers to spend more and businesses to hire more workers/would be taxpayers.
GOVERNOR'S SCHEDULE
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is in Sacramento for private meetings.
LEGISLATURE'S SCHEDULE
Members of the Assembly and Senate will check in as required to collect per diem payments. Several committees meet to hear bills and discuss the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. That spending plan is due by the end of June.
