1. Highway Safety Plan VO/SOT
The California Department of Transportation and other state agencies will announce plans for 152 actions they say will reduce serious traffic collisions and fatalities in California by 10 percent by the year 2010. Efforting soundbites and video regarding the city of Vallejo's declaration of bankruptcy and how it might effect other California cities facing financial difficulties and their union contracts.
3. Crime Initiative Opponents VO/SOT
Democratic legislators at the State Capitol will announce a plan to form a coalition to oppose an initiative that would lengthen criminal sentences, for fear it will add to the already overcrowded conditions at the state's prisons. Efforting soundbites and video.
4. Child Care, CalWorks Funding Cuts VO/SOT
Groups will stage two separate rallies at the capitol this morning, protesting budget cuts included in Governor Schwarzenegger January Budget Proposal. The group Parent Voices will protest the proposed $200 million reduction in child care spending, and the California Hunger Coalition will protest cutbacks in increases for Cost-Of-Living-Adjustments for participants in CalWorks (welfare to work) and other programs. Exit Exam Report The state school board will receive an update on the passage rates for the exit exam which improved overall.
Central Valley Green The Great Valley Center which advocates for the state's Central Valley will have its 11th annual conference. This year the featured topic will be how the environmental "green" movement will impact the valley.
Sustainability Fair Student Groups at the University of California at Davis are holding an on-campus Sustainability Fair today. Planned exhibits include those supporting California's proposed High Speed Rail system.
GOVERNOR'S SCHEDULE
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is in San Francisco for the Boys and Girls Club conference.
LEGISLATURE'S SCHEDULE
There are no legislative sessions scheduled. Members of both houses will check in as required to collect per diem. Budget and policy committee meetings in both houses are scheduled.
