1. NO "GET AWAY DAY" TODAY VO/SOT
It's "Day 3" of the state's late budget for the 2008-09 fiscal year that started Tuesday. That means instead of leaving for summer recess after today's session in both houses, lawmakers will be required to return next week. They will continue to collect more than 160 dollars per day in per diem as long as a majority of members in both houses checks in at the Capitol which means they let sergeants in either house know they are there, albeit however brief. Efforting soundbites and video.
2. SELF CHECK OUT BOOZE BAN VO/SOT
The Senate Governmental Organization Committee will consider a bill that would prohibit the sale of alcohol in self check out lines of grocery stores. The author of the bill changed the content of another bill or "gutted and amended" a bill that has already passed in the Assembly. If the bill gets through the Senate and passed on the floor it will then return to the Assembly for another vote. The bill's author says it is meant to address under age drinking as some blog sites targeting teens have turned up with instructions on how to avoid being carded while buying booze by using the self check out stations. Efforting soundbites and video.
3. RECREATIONAL SALMON BAN IN EFFECT VO/SOT
2008 recreational salmon fishing closures take effect today in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers and their tributaries. Catch and Release will still be permitted unless it results in excessive salmon mortality in which case it too could be banned. Efforting soundbites and video.
4. BULLDOGS HONORED VO/SOT
The College World Series Champion Fresno State Bulldogs will be honored in both houses of the legislature today during floor session. This is Fresno State's first national championship in a men's sport. The team was a serious underdog in the college world series and no other previous champion had more losses during its regular season than the Bulldogs. Efforting soundbites and video.
