GOVERNOR VOLUNTEERING BILL VO/SOT
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will discuss legislation to allow volunteers to work on public works projects that will exempt them from a requirement that they be paid prevailing wages. Efforting soundbites and video.
OIL SPILL PREVENTION BILLS VO/SOT
Assembly Democrats will discuss nine oil spill prevention bills they have authored, seven of which will be heard in the Natural Resources Committee later this afternoon. The bills were a reaction to the Cosco Busan incident in the San Francisco Bay late last year when the cargo ship crashed into the Bay Bridge. Efforting soundbites and video.
MORE NUKE POWER? VO/SOT
Assembly Chuck De Vore will introduce legislation that will lift restrictions for the construction of nuclear power plants. Similar legislation De Vore introduced last year was defeated in its first committee hearing. Efforting soundbites and video.
TEEN DRIVING SAFETY VO/SOT
State school and Highway Patrol officials will announce a new program called Impact Teen Drivers, which they say is designed to reduce injuries and fatalities for teens who are beginner drivers. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death of teenagers. The public awareness effort will be part of every sophomores instruction in California public schools. The announcement comes in advance of the legislature's Teen Driving Safety Week which lawmakers declared for the week of April 14. Efforting soundbites and video.
STATE PARKS RALLY VO
The President of the State Parks Foundation and lawmakers will protest the governor's proposed budget for the coming fiscal year that calls for the closure of 48 state parks and reducing life guard staffing at 16 state beaches. 325 are expected at the State Capitol protest that will include camping gear, kayaks and surf boards. Random Alphabet Draw The Secretary of State will conduct its random alphabet drawing to determine the order of candidate names in the replacement election for Senator Jeff Denham (R-Merced) should voters in his district elect to recall him.
Gun Bill Assemblyman Mark Desaulnier will introduce a bill requiring guns be personalized in such a way they can only be fired by those authorized to do so.
Another Toxic Toy Ban Senator Carole Migden will discuss her legislation to ban lead and the chemical Bisphenol A in children's toys and other products. The bill will be heard in the Environmental Quality Committee. A bill to ban phthalates in children's products passed and was signed by the governor last year.
Food and Product Safety Bills The Senate Environmental Quality Committee will consider bills to prohibit certain chemicals in fast food packaging and to prohibit the sale of recalled products.
Public Health Advisory Committee Directors of the Health and Environmental and Air Boards will introduce the public health advisory committee at the State Capitol. The event features booths to raise public health awareness and climate change.
