SUMMER ELECTRICITY SHORTAGES? VO/SOT
The chief executive of the California Independent System Operator which oversees the state's electricity grid will discuss his assessments for power availability during the summer when demand for electricity hits its peak. The ISO CEO says the state should have enough power to keep lights and air conditioners on, but there would likely be days particularly in Southern California when conservation and voluntary shut offs might be required to prevent rolling blackouts. CRIME VICTIMS BILL OF RIGHTS SIGNATURES VO/SOT
Supporters of Marsy's Law or the Crime Victims Bill of Rights will turn in more than 1.2 million signatures throughout California. Supporters will gather at the Sacramento County Registrar of Voters with lawmakers who support this potential November 2008 ballot initiative to discuss the measure which will allow greater access to parole and court hearings for the families of crime victims. PUBLIC COLLEGE LEADERS PROTEST CUTS VO/SOT
The chancellors of the California State University and Community College systems and the University of California Provost will conduct a joint press briefing to denounce proposed cuts to the state university and junior colleges that will total about one billion dollars. SCHOOL CHOICE BILLS VO/SOT
Three Assembly Republicans will discuss their bills that they say will improve school choice for children in failing schools. One will allow parents of children in failing schools to transfer to any school within their district or offer them half the per pupil spending amount for their child (5,000 per year) to help them attend private school and another that will offer tax credits for parents who home school their kids or send them to private school. BRUSH CLEARING TAX CUT VO/SOT
The Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee will consider a bill that would allow a tax deduction of up to 500 dollars for home owners for costs incurred while removing brush and other flammable vegetation from around their homes, to encourage people to protect their homes from wildfires. Delta Joint Meetings The California Department of Water Resources and the federal Bureau of Reclamation will conduct their first of 10 meetings throughout the state about draft environmental reports for increasing declining fish species and improving water quality in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.
Senate Appropriations Bills The Senate Appropriations Committee will consider bills to improve water quality, set low carbon fuel standards, remove lead from cosmetics and require pet food ingredients be labeled with the country of their origin. Generally, these bills are placed in the committee's suspense file where they are voted on at a later date.
