GOVERNOR CHAMBER HOST BREAKFAST VO/SOT

The Governor will deliver a speech at the 82nd annual California Chamber of Commerce Host Breakfast. He is expected to have a media availability following his speech at the Convention Center in Sacramento. Efforting soundbites and video.

NO MONEY, NO RAISES! VO/SOT

The Senate Rules Committee will decide on whether and to what committee to refer a Constitutional Amendment that would prohibit the Citizens Compensation Commission from granting pay raises to legislators if there is a budget deficit. Currently, the commission is required to meet once a year to determine whether to raise, freeze, and this year they may decide to cut lawmaker and constitutional officer pay. Although the commission is considering pay cuts due to the budget deficit, the commission is charged with making its decision independent of the state's fiscal health. The Constitutional Amendment by Senator Abel Maldonado (R-Santa Maria) would also clarify that the commission had the authority to decrease salaries. The commission is currently waiting on a written legal opinion stating so before deciding whether to hike or freeze pay at their June meeting. Efforting soundbites and video on the Maldonado bill in the rules committee.

SCHOOL SCORES RELEASED VO/SOT

State Schools Superintendent Jack O'Connell will release the 2007 base Academic Performance Index report that indicates school rankings and growth or lack of progress from the previous year. This allows for comparisons among California schools and determines whether California schools are meeting target requirements under the No Child Left Behind Act. A group of advocates for Career Technical Education (formerly known as Voc Ed) will discuss why its members believe the API scores don't accurately reflect the success any given student might have in the job market. Efforting soundbites and video.

SENATE REPUBLICANS GET CREATIVE VO/SOT

Senate Republicans claim they are answering the governor's call to get creative to find new revenue to bridge the state's 15 billion dollar budget gap. This week the GOP senators say they have a proposal to provide money for healthcare, schools, local services and the deficit. Efforting soundbites and video.

--FYI ONLY NO VIDEO--

Eminent Domain at Family Farm Supporters of Proposition 98 which would not allow ANY private property to be taken through eminent domain for another private person or company will conduct a news conference at a family farm in Stockton, part of which was seized for a public landfill that was later sold for a profit to a private landfill company. The other eminent initiative, Proposition 99, would only provide protections for residences but not second homes, farmland, businesses or churches.

McCain in Stockton Looks like Stockton's the place to be ... GOP presidential hopeful John McCain will be in Stockton for a fundraiser at the home of Alex Spanos and be greeted at the airport with a rally organized by local Republican Party supporters.

State Fair Board and NBA The California State Fair Board will discuss the proposed agreement to construct an NBA arena for the Sacramento Kings on the state fair grounds and a memorandum of understanding with the National Basketball Association. NBA Commissioner David Stern and former Governor Pete Wilson are taking part in the discussions.

Earthquake Standards The California Building Standards Commission will consider emergency regulations for retrofitting or upgrading existing hospitals for earthquake safety.

Teens Want Menu Labeling Teens from throughout the state will meet with the author of a bill that would require menus or menu boards for chain restaurants with more than 15 outlets in California to advocate for the labeling. The author has been negotiating with the Schwarzenegger administration in an effort to "veto proof" his legislation. The governor vetoed the bill last year, stating it would put a cost burden on restaurants that may be shifted on to consumers.

Ending Strokes at a Steak House? The Legislative Black Caucus and the American Heart Association will conduct their "Power to End Strokes" legislative reception at Chops, a popular steak restaurant across from the State Capitol. Perhaps that power lies in a brisk walk across the street to the cafe featuring salads???

GOVERNOR'S SCHEDULE

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is in Sacramento for the California Chamber of Commerce Host Breakfast.

LEGISLATURE'S SCHEDULE

The Senate and Assembly check in as required to collect per diem. Several policy and budget subcommittee meetings are scheduled in both houses.
