In the second week of our high school football playoff projections, the No. 1 seeds in the top three divisions remain unchanged. But change may be on the horizon, as Grant is idle this week and the other undefeated Division II teams could match the Pacers' 8-0 record.

During an earthquake, soft soils -- including artificial fills, bay mud and sediments -- can amplify ground shaking or even turn into a sandy liquid. Liquefaction disrupts roads and pipes, and can cause dramatic damage to buildings. After the Loma Prieta quake, the state Legislature established a program to identify and map seismically hazardous soils.

This map shows areas where the soil's susceptibility to liquefaction is either high (red) or very high (purple), according to assessments by the U.S. Geological Survey and the California Geological Survey. Only areas within 10 miles of the San Francisco Bay are shown here.

Roseville is ramping up its night life.

Highway officials and some drivers say they've noticed a surprising trend: less congestion on local freeways. Nevertheless, plenty of hot spots remain, notably in urban areas and areas where freeways meet. The median highway speed during afternoon rush hour, as measured in 2007 by Caltrans, is a 43 miles per hour. Click on a highlighted road to see more information about each segment. Pan to see highways in other parts of the Sacramento region, including Woodland, Auburn, Yuba City and Galt.

Almost 24,000 residences in the Sacramento region are vacant, according to a U.S. Postal Service survey of houses and apartments where mail has not been picked up for 90 days. This map shows census tracts in the six-county region that have vacancy rates above 4 percent -- more than twice the statewide rate of 1.7 percent.

FEMA's proposed flood map for Yolo County holds only slight changes for Woodland. About 35 percent of parcels within the city remain within the 100-year floodplain. A structure in these zones has a greater than 1 percent chance of flooding in a given year. Owners of properties in these zones may be required to purchase flood insurance, and the cost of insurance in these zones is higher. Use the zoom bar to see if your home or business is in a flood zone.

This map shows approximate 100-year flood zones that are inside or near the city. The Federal Emergency Management Agency classifies 100-year flood zones in several different ways -- the zones in Woodland are type AE.
