Coming amid foggy days and even gloomier economic forecasts, news that the Amgen Tour of California has chosen Sacramento as its starting point for next year's race delivered a welcome bolt of psychological sunshine.

Did you pedal here for the Amgen tour or cart along your bike? If so, you shouldn't miss the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail in the American River Parkway. The paved path meanders over 32 miles from Old Sacramento in downtown up to Beals Point on Folsom Lake. The path is named for Jedediah Smith, the first American explorer to view the confluence of the region's two rivers, the Sacramento and the American.
