One person got away but another was arrested June 25 after police responded to a suspicious activity call on a Sacramento street.
The incident began about 4 p.m., when a citizen saw two men jumping a residential fence on the 5000 block of Concord Road, south of the 21st Avenue Parkway, said Sgt. Matt Young, police spokesman. The witness, who phoned police, indicated that the men appeared to be leaving the grounds when he saw them jump the fence from the home's backyard. Responding officers stopped Patricio Lorato, 23, minutes later as he walked near 25th Avenue and Quonset Drive, about a block from the original incident, arrest reports said. Lorato, who lives on the 5200 block of Standish Road in the same neighborhood, was drunk and carrying an instrument that could be used as a lock-picking device, Young said.
"He also was found to have two concealed knives on his person," he said.
Lorato was booked into the Sacramento County jail on suspicion of possessing burglar's tools, disorderly conduct, being drunk in public and carrying a concealed dirk or dagger. The second man could not be located, Young said.
"We checked the houses in the area, and it didn't appear there were any attempted burglaries," Young said. "However, Mr. Lorato's being drunk in public and being in possession of the knives warranted his arrest."
Bailiffs foil attempted courtroom escape
Anthony Learson Bartholomew was out on bail and wanted to stay that way, authorities said. So, when Bartholomew appeared in Sacramento Superior Court on June 25 as a defendant in a stolen property case, he attempted to flee after a judge ordered him back to jail, officials said.
The attempted escape ended when Bartholomew, 21, was tackled by bailiffs, who handcuffed him, said Sgt. Tim Curran, a spokesman for the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.
"When the judge ordered him remanded, Bartholomew attempted to bolt from the courtroom," Curran said. "But, as far as I know, he didn't get out of the courtroom. He was tackled by the deputies, who prevented him from escaping."
The defendant was later transferred from the 651 I St. court to the county jail. Bartholomew, who is 5-foot-7 and weighs 220 pounds, had been out on bail after a recent arrest on charges of buying or receiving stolen property.
Curran said he did not know why the defendant was remanded into custody last week. Besides the original charges, Bartholomew is now charged with suspicion of escape/attempted escape, willful resistance to a court order and restricting or obstructing public peace officers.
Boy arrested in reported threat with iron
A 15-year-old boy in Antelope threatened to hurt a middle-age couple with a clothes iron, a sheriff's deputy reported.
At 7:50 p.m. June 17, deputies were called to Cougar Hills Way near Walerga Road, the report said. The boy became embroiled in an argument with a 59-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman, the report said. He threatened to hit the couple with a clothes iron that came to a point at the bottom, the report said.
The boy stood close to the iron, and the couple, who said they feared for their safety, called deputies and asked that he be arrested and prosecuted, the deputy reported.
Alleged threats of violence land man in jail
A 46-year-old man was arrested in Elverta after threatening to kill his mother and his family, a deputy said in a report. At 9:59 p.m. June 17, a 66-year-old woman called deputies from a home in the 500 block of U Street near Elverta Road, the report said. The woman told deputies that her son, Matthew Myers, had called more than five times and stated he was coming over to her residence to burn down her house and kill her and everyone else in the house, the report said.
The mother said she feared for the safety of herself and her family because she believed her son was capable of carrying out his threat, the report said. Deputies contacted Myers in his hotel room and arrested him without incident for allegedly making death threats, the report said.
