Public safety watch: Vandalism ends in arrest

Published: Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008 - 12:00 am | Page 3G

A Citrus Heights man was arrested July 28 in Sacramento on suspicion of felony vandalism after he allegedly sought to damage a parked van by pelting it with rocks and pieces of concrete, police said.

The van, owned by an alarm company, was in an industrial section at South Watt Avenue and District Court, north of Fruitridge Road, when it came under attack shortly after 9 a.m., police said.

"For no apparent reason or provocation, the man smashed all the van's windows by throwing rocks and pieces of concrete at it," said Sgt. Matt Young, police spokesman.

Nearby witnesses called 911 as the attacker walked away, Young said.

Officers responded and were able to locate a man matching the assailant's description at South Watt Avenue and Jackson Road, he said.

The arrested man was identified as Daniel Victor Nelson, 43.

He was booked into the Sacramento County jail on suspicion of committing vandalism that caused more than $400 in damage, which is a felony. Bail was set at $80,000.

"It's unknown what provoked him to do this," Young said. "There doesn't appear to be any connection between Mr. Nelson and the company that owns the van."

Bad choice leads to jail

A man driving near Sacramento International Airport on July 27 ran out of luck when law enforcement saw him where he shouldn't have been, arrest reports said.

The incident began about 9:20 p.m., when Sacramento County sheriff's deputies saw the motorist "driving out of a clearly marked closed section of roadway," the report said.

Although the motorist accelerated, the deputies stopped him at Power Line and Elverta roads, officers said.

The driver reportedly identified himself as being on parole and having a suspended driver's license.

Further investigation revealed that the man was under the influence of a stimulant and was carrying 4.2 grams of a suspicious crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine, according to the report.

The man also had an open alcoholic beverage container in the car's center console, the report said.

The motorist, identified as Rocco Dewayne Knight, 43, of Brooks in Yolo County was booked into the Sacramento County jail.

He was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a dangerous drug or controlled substance, being under the influence of a narcotic, violation of parole, being in possession of an alcoholic beverage in his car and driving with a suspended or revoked license.

Arrest for alleged pimping

A 28-year-old woman was arrested in the North Highlands area on suspicion of pimping and pandering four other women who were taken into custody on prostitution charges in an undercover sting operation, according to a deputy's report.

Between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. July 24, the women were arrested in the area of Watt Avenue and Orange Grove Avenue near Madison Avenue, the report said.

An unnamed witness, who was arrested on prostitution charges, reported to deputies that she had been forced to prostitute herself and was threatened with physical harm if she did not earn money and give that money to the suspect, the report said.

The suspect, Leslie Blackmon, 28, was taken into custody on the suspected of pimping and pandering charges, the report said.

According to the report, the women arrested on suspicion of prostitution were Tracy Ward, 38; Cheryl Gerlach, 24; Jessica McCraven, 21; and Regina Buford, 23.
