Public safety watch: Best Buy employee arrested

Published: Thursday, May. 15, 2008 | Page 3G

An employee of the new Best Buy in North Natomas was booked into Sacramento County jail on May 2 on suspicion of embezzlement, according to police and arrest reports.

The suspect, Frank Mondina, 21, of Sacramento came under suspicion after a corporate audit revealed that about $1,000 was missing from the store's bank deposits during the past few months, police said.

Mondina, whose job title was unavailable, was "the last person to touch the money" before it was sealed for transfer to the bank, police spokesman Konrad Von Schoech said.

"They had four deposits that were short money," he said.

On May 2, a Best Buy loss-prevention officer summoned police to the electronics store at 3690 N. Freeway Blvd., to arrest the suspect.

Officers took Mondina to jail.

He was released at 6:02 a.m. the next day on $5,000 bail, jail records show.
