Area homeless people can find shelter from the cold and rain this winter at Cal Expo.
The winter shelter, operated by Volunteers of America and funded by the county Department of Human Assistance, opens Monday and will remain open through late March.
The shelter can house as many as 154 men, women and children nightly in dormitory-like rooms. Residents may stay at the shelter for 14 consecutive days, with extensions granted under certain circumstances. Two meals a day are served.
Residents must prove they are free of tuberculosis before being admitted. Volunteers of America offers round-trip bus service to the facility from the Loaves & Fishes complex on North C Street.

Turkey cook-off contest to help feed the homeless
Homeless men, women and children will feast on turkeys prepared by top area restaurants in a turkey cook-off competition Monday.
The annual event started by Councilman Rob Fong last year will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at 1901 S St.
The turkeys will be judged for tenderness and flavor and then donated to Loaves & Fishes, city officials said.
Loaves & Fishes, a nonprofit organization, hopes to secure 200 cooked turkeys each year for its Thanksgiving meal.
"For many of our folks, this is the only Thanksgiving meal, and we are their only family," said Sister Libby Fernandez, executive director of Loaves & Fishes.
Participating restaurants in the cook-off include Jamie's Bar & Grill, Hangar 17 Bar & Grill, The Water Boy, Zocalo, Aioli, Fox & Goose, Center Court with C-Webb, Buckhorn Grill and Riverside Club House.
Interested restaurants should contact Jessica Equihua at (916) 808-5241.

Free workshop to offer help with mortgages
Homeowners struggling with their mortgages are invited to a free workshop today at which they may be able to meet with lenders.
The event, 2 to 8 p.m. in Pannell Meadowview Community Center, 2450 Meadowview Road, is being organized by the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency and Sacramento City Councilwoman Bonnie Pannell.
Homeowners facing or already in default or fore-closure are encouraged to attend if they have loans with Bank of America, Chase, Countrywide, IndyMac Bank, Wachovia, Washington Mutual or Wells Fargo.
They need to bring loan documents and financial information, such as pay stubs and bank statements, to verify their income so the lenders can determine if they're eligible for a loan modification.
