California State University, Sacramento, and other local colleges and universities will team up to host a special program on preparing for college.

The 14th annual "College: Making it Happen!" event will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in the CSUS University Union. This event is free and open to the public.

The program is for sixth- through ninth-graders and their families, although all students are welcome. Reservations are suggested. To reserve a spot or register online, visit the Web site at www.csus.edu/admr/cmih.

The program will include practical workshops on preparing academically and financially for college and on exploring career options. Representatives from Sacramento-area colleges and universities will be on hand to answer questions and provide information about their institutions.

There also will be a video emphasizing the importance of planning for college and the need for the entire family to be involved. In addition, there will be workshops in both Spanish and Hmong that will provide an overview of admissions and financial aid.

The program is sponsored by CSUS, Los Rios Community College District, UC Davis, Sacramento Cal-SOAP Consortium, MESA, Breakthrough Sacramento and other educational and community organizations. For more information call Doris Tormes at (916) 278-5610.
