Yuba County officials have received $2 million in state and federal funds to build a new wastewater system for a Smartville subdivision.
The system, which will serve 84 homes in the Gold Village subdivision, will be funded through an $850,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant and a $1.05 million loan and grant from the state Water Resources Control Board, according to a USDA news release.
In October 2006, the wastewater holding tank in Gold Village ruptured and discharged untreated sewage. As a temporary solution, Yuba County officials had sewage hauled to a nearby treatment plant and set up a portable treatment unit, the release states.
The federal funding was made possible by the recently passed 2008 Farm Bill, which provided $120 million to the USDA to fund backlogged infrastructure needs.
"The problems faced in Yuba County today are common to many rural towns throughout the state and nation," said Ben Higgins, the USDA's rural development state director, in a written statement. "Today's funds reflect our agency's ongoing commitment to ensure that communities such as Gold Village have access to safe and effective sanitation services."
