More than 100 firefighters battled a blaze that broke out along the lower stretch of the American River Parkway on Saturday afternoon.
Sacramento Fire Department received the call at 1:56 p.m. and responded to the fire, which burned on both sides of the levee and bike trail about three miles east of Discovery Park, according to Assistant Chief Alton McMillon.
The fire crews would remain through the night and into Sunday, McMillon said. Three firefighters were taken to area hospitals for heat-related illnesses, he said.
Officials briefly shut down part of Highway 160 as the flames got dangerously close to the roadway Saturday afternoon. A short stretch of the bike trail also was closed temporarily because of the fire, but was reopened by late afternoon.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, McMillon said.
