Don't be late. If you haven't yet filed for an economic stimulus payment, Wednesday is your last chance this year. And Oct. 15 is also the deadline if you took a six-month extension to file your regular taxes.
In recent weeks, the IRS has been clamoring to get the word out to millions of Social Security recipients and retired or disabled veterans including nearly 500,000 in California who may not be aware that they can file for an economic stimulus payment.
They're the folks who normally don't file taxes because of low incomes. But this year, to be eligible for a $300 stimulus check ($600 for married couples), they must file an IRS 1040A or 1040 tax form.
Nationally, about 4.3 million of the 20.3 million eligible low-income recipients have not yet filed for a stimulus payment. In California, it's about 26 percent of those eligible. (If you normally file taxes, the IRS doesn't need you to file for a stimulus payment separately.)
The IRS has been somewhat mystified why so many low-income retirees have yet to apply.
"It's hard to know why," said IRS spokeswoman Kathy Howell. "Some may be isolated in nursing homes. Some may be veterans who don't want to come forward. Some may not want to be found because they fear they have to pay back taxes or child support."
Howell urged anyone with older friends or family to check if they haven't yet filed.
To qualify, individuals must have at least $3,000 in income from Social Security, railroad benefits or nontaxable veterans benefits, such as disability pay. Supplemental Security Income does not apply toward the $3,000.
To obtain an IRS form 1040A, visit the IRS office at 4330 Watt Ave. or call the IRS at (800) 829-1040. Individuals also can file for a stimulus payment online at www.irs.gov; look for "FreeFile," pick one of the companies, fill out and sign the form electronically, then submit.

Do not copy and paste outside material into the comment box.
Don't repeat the same comment over and over. We heard you the first time.
Do not use the commenting system for advertising. That's spam and it isn't allowed.
Don't use all capital letters. That's akin to yelling and not appreciated by the audience.
You should also know that The Sacramento Bee does not screen comments before they are posted. You are more likely to see inappropriate comments before our staff does, so we ask that you click the "report abuse" button to submit those comments for moderator review. You also may notify us via email at feedback@sacbee.com. Note the headline on which the comment is made and tell us the profile name of the user who made the comment. Remember, comment moderation is subjective. You may find some material objectionable that we won't and vice versa.
If you submit a comment, the user name of your account will appear along with it. Users cannot remove their own comments once they have submitted them, but you may ask our staff to retract one of your comments by sending an email to feedback@sacbee.com. Again, make sure you note the headline on which the comment is made and tell us your profile name.
