Check insurance policies, Brooke customers urged

Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner warned consumers Thursday to check their insurance coverage if they've recently bought policies from agents with Brooke Corp., a now bankrupt Kansas-based insurer.

More than 200 franchised Brooke agencies operate in California. Its agents may operate and advertise as Brooke Insurance and Financial Services, Brooke Auto Insurance or Brooke Insurance.

Brooke filed for Chapter 11 protection with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Kansas City on Oct. 28.

Poizner said the bankruptcy is unlikely to affect California residents, but he urged consumers to check their coverage immediately because several Brooke franchise offices closed in California recently.

He said consumers who bought Brooke policies should check their coverage with the insurer -- which is still operating -- or the Brooke agent from whom they bought it, especially if they don't yet have proof of coverage.
