A still-sliding economy will coincide with a business buyer's market in 2009, according to a survey by the Sacramento-based California Association of Business Brokers.
CABB, a nonprofit trade organization, recently surveyed more than 650 members throughout California about industry trends and economic expectations in 2009.
More than half the respondents believe the economy will be slightly down (26 percent) or significantly down (33 percent). Nearly 75 percent said that 2009 will continue to be a buyer's market, despite current difficulties in obtaining financing.
"As more baby boomers look to retire, you will see more business go up for sale, creating an opportunity for buyers," said Ron Hottes, president of CABB.
Survey respondents cited several industries that they believe will do well in 2009.
"Service businesses, restaurants and businesses in the medical field are great to invest in," said Julie Gordon White, a CABB member and chief executive of BlueKey Business Brokerage M&A in Point Richmond. "These businesses are still fairly strong, which makes them good candidates for selling or buying."
